Fling Swing Maching:

Take on challenging platforming stages as you try to escape a deadly lab. Playing as a small robot you need to charge your movement so you can dash over gaps and reach freedom. This game was created between February-May 2023 for my second year on the Games Technology Course at the University of the Creative Arts Farnham. This was a solo project, with everything in the game being created by me. Created in Unreal Engine using the C++ Language.

This game was designed to be taking a simple mechanic, in this case dashing over gaps rather then jumping, and adding to it modularly, only beginning to work on the next mechanic once the prior one was completed. This scheduling structure allowed me to create a complete feeling experience without giving myself too much of a workload within the short time frame. I feel I took the idea as far as I could within the time given to me, whilst still giving it a satisfying ending. The modular approach made it so each room of the game had time to develop into something fun without feeling like they were rushed together. The assets used in this game were a mix of those available automatically in the Unreal Engine and a few I made in Maya myself, such as the main character and the bullet turrets. Fun fact: This game’s idea was one that I came up for in a dream.

A key focus of mine when designing this game was to work on my level design skills. I personally found that my abilities had been lacking in the past when designing the levels of my games, that my skills could use some improvements to increase the standards of my work. Thankfully, I believe I achieved that goal during the course of this project, and that the majority of challenges in this game are well designed. The game itself is quite difficult, however the challenge manages to be fair, with each obstacle providing you with the information on how to get past them, you just need to figure the right timing to do so. When people played the game they felt that, stating that even though they kept dying they were still having fun and kept coming back to try and get further through the stage.
